Lady Saints Cruise to 3-0 Shutout Over Hurricanes
DAHLONEGA, GA
– The North Georgia women’s soccer team played a
scoreless first half against the Hurricanes, but North Georgia
exploded for a trio of second half goals to defeat Georgia
Southwestern 3-0 Tuesday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference
action.
North Georgia records their straight shutout and improve to 6-3-2
overall and 2-2-1 in the Peach Belt Conference, while Georgia
Southwestern falls to 3-9 overall and 0-6 in the league.
The Lady Saints had numerous chances in the first half, recording
15 shots, and nine shots on goal, but never found the back of the
net as the Hurricanes battled North Georgia to a scoreless game at
intermission.
North Georgia started the second period with a pair of goals in
the first two minutes as Casey Smith took control, scoring at the
45:17 mark, and coming right back in the 48th minute to give the
Lady Saints a 2-0 advantage. Laura Lane assisted the first goal of
the game, while Smith’s second goal was unassisted and her
fourth of the season.
The Lady Saints added one more goal in the 59th minute as Kelly
Penston took a perfect pass from Danielle Brannan to give North
Georgia a 3-0 victory. Emily Hughes was also credited with an
assist on the play as North Georgia cruised down the stretch to
pick up the conference victory.
North Georgia outshot Georgia Southwestern 26-3, while taking
seven corner kicks to the Hurricanes one.
Kelly Martin got the start in goal for the Lady Saints and faced
one shot, none on goal, in the first half, while Kirsten Ross took
over for the second half and recorded one save. Amber Bahri went
the distance in goal for the Hurricanes, allowing all three North
Georgia goals while recording 13 saves.
The Lady Saints will look to win their third straight game
Saturday afternoon as in-state rival Armstrong Atlantic comes to
town for an all-important Peach Belt Conference game. Kickoff is
set for 1:00 p.m. at the Soccer Complex.
