Wayne State Holds on For 3-2 Win Over Saints
DECATUR, GA – The 11th-ranked North
Georgia softball suffered their first loss of the season Saturday
afternoon, seeing a last at-bat comeback fall just short in a 3-2
loss to Wayne State on day two of the 2009 UAH Charger
Chillout.
The Saints fall to 6-1 on the season and will look to get right
back on the winning track this afternoon against Lynn University at
4:30 p.m. (CST).
North Georgia fell behind early for the first time all season,
seeing the Warriors push across a pair of first-inning runs to take
a 2-0 lead. With two outs and the bases clear, Wayne State rallied
with two doubles, a walk, and a passed ball to take the lead.
The Warriors would add another run in the second inning as Allison
Allen singled up the middle to plate Stephanie LeClair and extend
the lead to 3-0.
The North Georgia bats were quiet all day, going up against the
pitching of Casey Hanes who struck out 10 over seven innings.
With the Saints still down 3-0 heading to the last of the seventh,
Hilary Cox started a rally, reaching on an error by the shortstop.
Stephanie Farmakis followed with a single to second base to bring
the potential tying run to the plate.
After a groundout moved the runners up, Kim Stercay came to the
plate and singled to left field, plating Cox and putting the
go-ahead run at the plate. After Farmakis scored on a
fielder’s choice, the Saints had the tying run at third base
when a line drive ended the rally and sent the Saints to their
first loss of the season.
Sarah Phillips (3-1) picks up her first loss of the season,
allowing six hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out
six in 7.0 innings of work.
