Voyles Named World Series All-Tournament Team
DAHLONEGA, GA – North Georgia College &
State University’s Laura Voyles has been named to the 2009
NCAA Division II Softball Championship All-Tournament Team
announced Monday afternoon at the conclusion of the National
Championship game.
Voyles led her team to the semi-finals of the National
Championships, defeating Dixie State and Angelo State in dramatic
fashion before falling to Lock Haven University, the eventual
National Champions. The junior third baseman battled injuries the
entire postseason, but still managed the biggest hit of her career
in the opening round of the tournament as the Saints were down to
their final strike against Dixie State. With North Georgia down
three runs in the last of the seventh, Voyles connected on a
two-strike pitch with two runners on and launched a three-run blast
to tie the game, a contest the Saints eventually won 5-3 in
10-innings.
The Powder Springs, Ga., native hit .364 for the tournament,
making 11 trips to the plate and recording four hits, including
three base knocks in the opening game against Dixie State. Voyles
added a pair of walks in the championships, and scored two runs
while driving in three. She played in errorless third base in four
games, and added five assists while recording an on base percentage
of .462.
In 2009, North Georgia captured the Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Championship, PBC Tournament Championship, NCAA Southeast Dahlonega Regional Championship, and the NCAA Southeast Super Regional Dahlonega Championship to advance to their first-ever Division II College World Series.
