JP O’Connor is in his fourth season as head rifle coach at North Georgia College & State University. The 2009-10 season marks the rifle team’s second year competing as an intercollegiate sport at North Georgia in NCAA Division II.

Last season the team won the Southeastern Collegiate Sectionals, finished fourth in the Southeastern Rifle Conference, and was named Most Improved Team in the conference. The rifle team competes in Division I. Each year the team steps up their level of performance and has their sights set on having a great season in 2009-2010.

In one three month period he helped a sophomore recover from a disastrous season and disappointing collegiate national championship performance to then win a USA Shooting Open (all ages) National Championship and earn a berth on the World Championships US Team. In the same three month period he helped a true freshmen prepare for and win an NCAA championship and a World Cup. He works with athletes and teams in all sports, and performers outside of sports such as musicians, singers, public speakers, and others.

While he truly enjoys working closely with athletes as they build their technique and mental toughness, Coach O’Connor most enjoys seeing athletes grow as people. Life lessons are far more important than simply playing the game.

Professionally, Coach O’Connor specializes in the areas of data analysis, decisions support, data visualization, data mining, and related data driven decision-making activities for Fortune 100 corporations and state and local education agencies. In his spare time, Coach O’Connor enjoys his own target shooting training and competition and is a licensed Amateur Extra Class ham radio operator, holding the call sign WF4Z.

Coach O’Connor was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and has lived all over the Midwest, but has called Georgia home for over twenty years. He and his wife Deanna have two daughters, Monica, a graduate student at Georgia Tech, and Michelle, a high school mathematics teacher.
